The Playlists

2009 in Review

The playlist for 2009:

1. Scars —– Papa Roach
“My weakness is that I care too much. And my scars remind me that the past is real…”
While the competition for song of the Year was intense for 2009, Scars takes top notch just by the unmistakable, universal truths it holds. Our greatest strengths and weaknesses are the things, places, people, ideas, and values we hold close.
As an aside, for the friend who came around when I was “drunk and I’m feeling down, and I just want to be alone,” – thank you for staying. You may never know how much that meant, but I always will.

2. So Much For the Afterglow —— Everclear
Just a fantastic summation about how nothing turns out the way we think it will when we’re younger and have the world in front of us.

3. 21 Guns —– Green Day
4. Half-truism —– The Offspring
I’m sure I’ll get questions about why I have a very anti-war song (in 21 Guns) and one that seems very pro-revolutionary in the same list and right next to each other. Think about it this way: our nation quite arguably hasn’t been so politically divided on so many hugely vital issues since the Civil War. To me, both songs show the desperation of the situation from their own respective viewpoints.

5. Shimmer —– Fuel
“We’re here and now, but will we ever be again?”

6. Dashboard —– Modest Mouse
Guilty pleasure song for 2009. Anyone who claims not to car-dance when it comes on the radio is a liar.

7. Fighting Dreamers —– Flow
Long standing fans of the yearly playlist will note I usually have at least one instrumental or foreign song on the list each year. This one should be familiar to our anime fans as well – it served as the series 4 opener for Naruto.

8. Fall to Pieces —– Velvet Revolver
For us moody types, the past, present, and future often meld together. This song exemplifies how I feel in that mood, and we had a lot of that in 2009.

9. I Gotta Feeling —– Black Eyed Peas
My happy optimism song for the year 😉

10. Welcome to the Black Parade (We’ll Carry On) —– My Chemical Romance
A close contender for song of the year, this is such a great screw you we aren’t giving up ever song, fitting very nicely with number 11…

11. You’re Gonna Go Far, Kid —– The Offspring
Second verse is a good tease for one of my writing projects. I don’t know if I’ll share it with everyone or anyone, or even if I’ll end up finishing it, but this song rightly expresses the anger in it.
