Well, ho ho ho, readers. Sick for almost two weeks now, I seem to be finally on the mend, which means that although I’m running this a little later than I usually do, I can share part one of my traditional Year in Review! I’m trying some new things this year — I added some lyrics and explaination to my Soundtrack, as a lot of people misinterpreted some of my choices last year. Not a big deal, but I like to be clear on my ntentions. I also put my songs in some sort of relevant order for the year (you’ll understand better as you read through the list) and cut the list back to its traditional 20-to-25-song size (after last year’s 40-ish, but hey, last year was a pretty important one as far as Jen-development was concerned).
So without further ado, here is….
Jen’s Soundtrack for 2007
1. Theme Song for H-Street – Less Than Jake
“And you were right about just how we’d figure out things change but beliefs stay the same..”
2. The Kids Aren’t Alright – The Offspring
“The kids are grown up but their lives are worn…”
3. You Don’t Know How It Feels – Tom Petty
‘Cuz you don’t know how it feels….to be me.
4. Thnks Fr Th Mmrs – Fall Out Boy
“Thanks for the memories, even though they weren’t so great.”
5. Baby Be Brave – The Corrs
“Tell me what’s it all for if you’re not terrified to fail?”
6. Wasting My Time – Default
This one’s shown up on end-of-year soundtracks before, because it’s just such a great song. I’m often asked why I “waste my time” on certain hopeless-seeming projects. Usually something happens where my being there has made all the difference. “I just hit the floor, don’t ask for more.” And it’s not a waste.
7. Hey There Delilah – Plain White T’s
“A thousand miles seems pretty far, but they’ve got planes and trains and cars,
I’d walk to you if I had no other way
Our friends would all make fun of us, but we’ll just laugh along because
We know that none of them have felt this way…”
8. Suddenly I See – KT Tunstall
“Suddenly I see why the hell it means so much to me.”
9. Let’s Get It Started – Black Eyed Peas
“Obstacles are inefficient, follow your intuition, free your inner soul and break away from tradition”
10. Amber – 311
This is just a really fun, lucid song. “Brainstorm, take me away from the norm…”
11. Field Below – Regina Spektor
This is just a hauntingly beautiful song. Regina’s CD (appropriately titled ‘begin to hope”) is an interesting one, and this year’s soundtrack wouldn’t be complete without a representative from the album.
12. Carry On My Wayward Son – Kansas
“..there’ll be peace when you are done.”
13. Grand Theft Auto/Where is Your Boy (instrumental) – The Angry String Orchestra
14. Every Dog Has Its Day – Flogging Molly
The title says it all.
15. Everlong – Foo Fighters
“And I wonder, when I sing along with you
if everything could ever feel this real forever,
if anything could ever be this good again…”
16. I’m Alright – Jo Dee Messina
“Been singin’ for my rent and singin’ for my supper
I’m above the below and below the upper
I’m stuck in the middle where money gets tight
But I guess I’m doin’ alright”
17. I Will Buy You a New Life – Everclear
“I hate those people who love to tell you money is the root of all that kills,
They have never been poor, they have never had the joy of a welfare Christmas…”
18. And We Danced – Hooters
This one’s another fun song we listened to a lot this year. Upbeat, danceable ‘80s tune, and I love the harmonica bits.
19. First Time – Lifehouse
“I’m feeling alive all over again…”
20. Snow (Hey Oh) – Red Hot Chili Peppers
“Privately divided by a world so undecided and there’s nowhere to go”
21. Paralyzer – Finger Eleven
This is my driving song. I have been known on 20-degree mornings to roll down all my windows and blast this song on my morning drive to work. What’s hilarious is you’ll see about 20 other people driving on 480 who are doing the EXACT SAME THING. And we’re all head banging in unison and…um…I guess you just have to be there. But it’s awesome.
22. The Search is Over – Survivor
You’ll be hard-pressed to find a reader of this journal who hasn’t heard this song, and therefore who doesn’t know exactly why this is on here. Go review the lyrics again for posterity (they’re extremely fitting).
23. Stay Young – Oasis
“Hey! Stay young and invincible, cuz we know just what we are and
Come what may, we’re unstoppable, cuz we know just what we are.”
And now, the song of the year. This one was hard to pick this year. Jo Dee Mesina’s “I’m Alright” was a front runner for most of the year, and both Fall Out Boy’s “Thnks Fr Th Mmrs and Oasis’s “Stay Young” take honorable mentions. But overall, this year’s top honors go to Foo Fighters’ “Everlong.” The studio version is awesome, but there’s a live acoustic version of the song that is just so awesome that all of you need to go to Walmart.com right now and download it.
Seriously. Go right now. This entry is done now anyway.
